Description

Professors Mehgen Andrade and Katie Coleman use psychological and sociological theory and evidence-based research to examine the current trend in recent years across the United States for juveniles to stand trial as adults - more than 200,000 each year, most for non-violent crimes. In the last several years, the number of youth doing time in adult prisons has tripled. On any given day, 10,000 children are housed in adult prisons and jails. When considering juvenile cognitive development and ability, is incarcerating children in adult facilities really the most appropriate response to their "bad" behavior? What has gone wrong with our juvenile justice system, and how did we get here?
