Home Decor Bargains, Wholesale and Off Retail Shopping

By Debbie Krubsack

You could head to your nearest design shop, consult their designer and have everything custom made for your home. It would certainly maximize your time and help you get the job done. But it is also possible that you'd like to save some money--or you just enjoy the thrill of hunting for a bargain. Whatever motivates you, we'll share the insider secrets to maximizing your dollars while customizing your look.

The Textile District, Downtown Los Angeles
You'll find more variety here than you could imagine. Whether it's the latest fabrics or those from the last decade, they're probably all here. One of my favorite stores is Home Fabrics (213-689-9600) on Wall Street, just off 9th Avenue. They offer two floors of fabrics, trim and drapery rods that are well organized and humming with activity. Prefabricated comforters and a few pieces of furniture are also sold at Home Fabrics. Many other stores dot the streets of the district, with bolts of fabric cascading down the walls and bulging from their entrance doors. You'll also find stores specializing in rugs and apparel fabrics. Plan another trip to the area to shop the various districts for fine jewelry, apparel, perfumes, handbags, bridal, beads, and costume jewelry.

Major Retailers
Don't be afraid to shop the major retailers. Watch for sales and clip coupons. JoAnn's and Beverly's often mail out coupons for 40% off a single cut of fabric. Sign up for their mailing lists. Tip: JoAnn's in Porter Ranch has a very wide selection of fabrics and trim, as well as flat folds of fabric at incredibly discounted prices.

Custom Sewing

Window Treatments by Annie
Quality that beats most professionals brings Annie's customers all the way from Malibu. You purchase your fabric and supplies and Annie will create the masterpiece. Just like the model homes, you'll have custom draperies, pillows, and table runners that coordinate…very close to the price (if not better) than ready-made items at your local linen store. Can't find a comforter just right for your room? No problem. Combining Annie's skills with a custom product from Ronco Industries (below) will produce a masterpiece unlike any other. (661) 298-8711

Custom-size Comforters and Pillows

Ronco Industries
This is one of those numbers you'll want to keep on file. Located near the Roxford St. exit off Hwy 5 South, this company can create any size comforter, featherbed, cushion or pillow you need. Down? Feathers? Combination? Foam? No problem. They also have many standard sizes to choose from. You'll be able to purchase a top-quality product not available from local retail stores, yet at wholesale prices. This no-frills warehouse caters to their customers. It's a good idea to call ahead. 15401 Cobalt Ave., Sylmar (818) 362-1578

Located in Burbank just off Hwy 5, you'll find a great solution to your home office needs. The quality ranges from what we consumers jokingly label 'curb furniture' to what one IKEA employee compared to Pennsylvania House. An in-house designer offers complimentary assistance. While IKEA does have a distinctive contemporary flair, you can personalize your space by attaching moldings from your local home improvement store or by adding accessories from other retailers. Of greatest interest may be options to improve functionality of storage spaces including garage, closets and kitchen. Prices are surprisingly affordable for the quality. 818-842-4532

While there are many wonderful retailers to choose from, check out these off-price retailers for quality merchandise at discounted prices, resulting in a great value. A rule of thumb: If you like it, buy it or it won't be there when you return. You should have 30 days for a full refund, but verify before you finalize your purchase.

This is the mother of all great discount stores for home decorating and a sister store to TJ Maxx and Marshalls. It's located in the Promenade at Town Center at the intersection of McBean Parkway & Magic Mountain Parkway. With over 20,000 square feet of furniture, decorative items, bedding and more this is sure to become one of your favorite stops. This store also operates on offering name brands and current styles for considerably less than department store prices. 253-0477

Ross Dress For Less
Whether you're dressing yourself or dressing your home, this is a great place to stop. It is located in the Von's shopping center at the corner of Newhall Ranch Road and Bouquet Canyon Road. Using a similar marketing plan as TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Homegoods, you'll typically find brand-name merchandise for up to 60% less than department stores. Stein Mart
Unusual housewares, French crystal, luxury linens, photo frames, home decorating items and apparel are all available at this distinctive, yet discounted department store. If you are looking for something 'a cut above,' you may find it here. Located next to Linens 'n Things at the corner of Pico Canyon Road and The Old Road. 222-2398

Other Retailers
Don't overlook your favorite retailer. Target has some neat home decorating items including mix and match lamp shades; wander the aisles of Lowes and you'll be totally inspired; the staff at Lowes and Home Depot can be very helpful with miter cuts to create your own custom shelving units and frames; Aaron Brothers has a great 1¢ sale and offers coupons online; department stores always have white sales and inventory reduction sales and even the priciest stores have discontinued or floor samples to clear out.
