Hike Weldon Canyon Trail
Weldon Canyon Trail in the Early Spring, Santa Clarita
3.5 miles one way, 7 miles round trip with additional options
Moderate to Difficult
Weldon Canyon is a service road that is still used by Southern California Edison, Fire Trucks, and other service vehicles. However, since there are locked gates at all entrances, it is rare to see any traffic on this steep climb. It is 3.5 miles from the trailhead to the top section, where you can either turn around, or continue to the right to traverse the ridge to go to East Canyon or to the left to proceed to O'Melveny Park in the San Fernando Valley. Please refer to the East Canyon Description for more information on these alternatives. The trail is a steep, steady and dry climb with little protection from sun and wind. It is best to avoid the heat of summer on this trail.
How to Get to the Trailhead:
The Weldon Canyon Trailhead is located off of the Old Road in Newhall. Exit I-5 at Calgrove, and proceed South on the Old Road. You will see a bridge across the freeway that leads to a gun club. Turn right and cross this bridge. On the other side, make a right hand turn. You will see the MRCA sign for Weldon Canyon a short distance up the road on your left side. Parking at this MRCA area is free as there is only street parking available.
